Environment occasions

Twelve environment days observed in India, from World Water Day to World Soil Day, with dates and messages that say something real rather than posting a leaf.

Twelve days, nearly all of them United Nations observances, and between them they cover most of what is under strain: water, forests, soil, oceans, wetlands, wildlife, air.

They are also the category most heavily used for corporate posts, which is why a genuine message here stands out so easily. A photograph of a sapling tells the reader nothing. One local fact does.

The days through the year

The year opens with World Wetlands Day on 2 February, which matters more in India than most people realise: the country has one of the largest networks of Ramsar sites in the world.

Spring brings World Wildlife Day, the International Day of Forests, World Water Day on 22 March and Earth Day on 22 April.

Then World Bee Day, the International Day for Biological Diversity, World Environment Day on 5 June, which India has hosted, and World Oceans Day.

The year closes with World Ozone Day, World Soil Day and International Mountain Day.

What to write

Pick one thing near you. The lake that used to be there. The borewell that goes deeper every year. The trees on your street, counted.

Each of these days has an official theme published annually by the UN body that runs it, and using it is the difference between a message that fits this year and one that could have been posted any year since 2010.

If you are writing for an organisation, the honest version names what you are actually changing, with a number. Announcing a commitment is fine; announcing a sentiment on a green background is what everyone else is doing that morning.
