About World Ozone Day
World Ozone Day, properly the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is observed on 16 September, and in 2027 it falls on Thursday, 16 September 2027. It marks the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, the agreement that phased out the chemicals thinning the ozone layer. India has been a party since 1992 and runs the treaty at home through the Ozone Cell.
The ozone story is the one environmental problem the world has largely fixed. Scientists identified the cause, governments banned the chemicals, industry found replacements, and the layer is thickening again. That took about fifteen years from first alarm to binding treaty.
What is World Ozone Day and why 16 September?
World Ozone Day, formally the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, is on 16 September because the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed on that date in 1987. The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day by resolution 49/114 in 1994.
The ozone layer is a thin band of ozone gas high in the stratosphere that blocks most of the sun's ultraviolet-B radiation. Without it, rates of skin cancer, eye cataracts and damage to crops and plankton would be far higher. In the 1970s and 1980s, chlorofluorocarbons used in refrigerators, air conditioners, foams and aerosol sprays were found to break ozone apart, and a seasonal hole opened over Antarctica.
- 1985Vienna Convention
Countries agree to cooperate on protecting the ozone layer, without binding cuts yet.
- 16 Sep 1987Montreal Protocol
The treaty that actually sets phase-out schedules for ozone-depleting chemicals is signed.
- 19 Jun 1992India joins
India becomes a party to the Montreal Protocol.
- 1994The UN day begins
The General Assembly proclaims 16 September; the first observance is in 1995.
- 16 Sep 2009Universal ratification
The Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol become the first UN treaties ratified by every country.
- 2016Kigali Amendment
The treaty is extended to hydrofluorocarbons, which do not harm ozone but warm the atmosphere strongly.
The 2022 scientific assessment by WMO and UNEP found that about 99 per cent of the banned substances have been phased out. On current policies it projects that ozone will return to its 1980 levels around 2066 over the Antarctic, 2045 over the Arctic, and 2040 for the rest of the world.
What is India doing under the Montreal Protocol?
India has been a party since 19 June 1992, and the Ozone Cell in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has run the national observance since 1995. India phased out CFCs, carbon tetrachloride and halons on schedule at the start of 2010, and is working through its HCFC Phase-out Management Plan, aiming to finish with HCFCs by 2030.
India ratified the Kigali Amendment in September 2021. Its schedule freezes hydrofluorocarbon use later than rich countries' and phases it down in steps to 2047, which is the flexibility the treaty gives developing economies. India was also among the first countries anywhere to publish a national cooling plan, the India Cooling Action Plan of March 2019, which treats cooling demand, building design, refrigerant choice and servicing skills as one problem.
| Chemical family | Where you met it | Status |
|---|---|---|
| CFC (R-12, R-11) | Old fridges, aerosol sprays, foam blowing | Banned; India completed phase-out from 1 January 2010 |
| Halon | Fire extinguishers | Banned for most uses; some critical aviation uses continue |
| HCFC (R-22) | Room air conditioners sold in India until recently | Being phased out; India's target is complete removal by 2030 |
| HFC (R-410A, R-134a) | Current air conditioners, car ACs, fridges | Safe for ozone but strong greenhouse gases; being phased down under Kigali |
| HFO and low-GWP options (R-32, R-290) | Newer air conditioners | Lower warming impact; R-290 is propane and needs trained handling |
What actually helps on World Ozone Day
The useful actions for a household are almost all about cooling equipment.
- When a fridge or air conditioner is scrapped, insist the refrigerant is recovered, not vented. Ask the scrap dealer and refuse if they cannot say how.
- Get air conditioners serviced by trained technicians. A leaking unit loses gas to the atmosphere and runs hotter and costlier.
- Set the thermostat at 24 degrees, the default the Bureau of Energy Efficiency recommends for Indian rooms, and clean the filters monthly.
- Before buying, look at the refrigerant type and the star rating together. R-32 and R-290 units warm the atmosphere far less than R-410A.
What to write on World Ozone Day
Related observances: World Environment Day on 5 June, Indian Akshay Urja Day on 20 August for renewable energy, and National Science Day on 28 February, since the ozone story is a case of science moving policy.
How to wish someone on World Ozone Day
This is the rare environment day with good news attached, so the tone can be positive without sounding false. The ozone layer is healing because a treaty worked. For engineers, refrigeration technicians and air-conditioner servicemen, the day is directly about their trade, and a message that acknowledges that is better than a general note about saving the earth.

Frequently asked questions
When is World Ozone Day in 2027?
World Ozone Day 2027 falls on Thursday, 16 September 2027.
Why is World Ozone Day observed on 16 September?
World Ozone Day is on 16 September because the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed on that date in 1987. The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day in 1994 through resolution 49/114, and the first observance was in 1995.
What is the Montreal Protocol in simple words?
The Montreal Protocol is a 1987 treaty in which countries agreed to stop making and using the chemicals that destroy the ozone layer, mainly CFCs and later HCFCs, on fixed timetables. Every country in the world has ratified it, and about 99 per cent of the controlled substances have been phased out.
Is the ozone hole closing?
Yes, slowly. The 2022 scientific assessment by the World Meteorological Organization and UN Environment Programme projects that ozone will return to 1980 levels around 2066 over Antarctica, by 2045 over the Arctic and by 2040 over the rest of the world, if current controls hold.
What is the Kigali Amendment and has India signed it?
The Kigali Amendment of 2016 extends the Montreal Protocol to hydrofluorocarbons, gases that do not harm ozone but trap a great deal of heat. India ratified it in September 2021 and will phase down HFC use in steps up to 2047.
Is the ozone hole the same thing as global warming?
No. Ozone depletion is caused by chlorine and bromine chemicals breaking up ozone molecules high in the stratosphere, which lets more ultraviolet radiation through. Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases trapping heat. They overlap only because some cooling gases affect both.
What can a household do to protect the ozone layer?
Make sure refrigerant is recovered rather than released when an old fridge or air conditioner is scrapped, use trained technicians so units do not leak, and choose newer refrigerants such as R-32 or R-290 when buying. Keeping the thermostat near 24 degrees cuts both power use and wear on the system.
