About Earth Day
Earth Day is an environmental awareness day held every 22 April, in 2027 on Thursday, 22 April 2027. It began in the United States in 1970 as a mass protest about pollution, and the United Nations added the name International Mother Earth Day in 2009. In India it is not a holiday; it is mostly kept by schools, colleges, eco clubs and companies.
Earth Day is an organising day, not a festival. Nobody cooks anything for it, no office in India closes, and it carries no ritual. What it does carry is a date that large numbers of people agree to use for the same subject at the same time, which is the whole reason it has lasted more than fifty years.
Why is Earth Day on 22 April?
The first Earth Day was held on 22 April 1970 in the United States. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin proposed it after a large oil spill off Santa Barbara in January 1969, and a young organiser named Denis Hayes built it out with a staff of 85. About 20 million Americans took part, roughly a tenth of the country at the time. The date was picked for a dull, practical reason: a weekday in late April, after American spring break and before final exams, when the most students would be free.
The day went international in 1990, when Hayes ran a second campaign that reached 200 million people in 141 countries. In 2009 the UN General Assembly named 22 April International Mother Earth Day through resolution 63/278, a text brought by Bolivia. That is why you will see two names for the same date, and why UN agencies use the longer one.
The date has also been used deliberately. On 22 April 2016, 175 countries signed the Paris Agreement at UN headquarters in New York, the largest number ever to sign a treaty on the day it opened.
Who marks Earth Day in India?
In India, Earth Day belongs mostly to schools, colleges and workplaces. Eco clubs run poster and slogan contests, science departments hold talks, resident welfare associations organise clean-ups and plantation drives, and companies fold it into their sustainability reporting. It is not on any government holiday list and no ministry runs a national programme for it.
The official Indian calendar puts its weight on World Environment Day on 5 June instead. India hosted the global edition of that day in 2018, under the theme Beat Plastic Pollution. Two national programmes also sit closer to 5 June than to 22 April: Mission LiFE, launched at Kevadia in Gujarat in October 2022 to push household-level changes in how people use energy, water and plastic; and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, the tree-planting campaign launched on 5 June 2024, under which the environment ministry reported 80 crore saplings planted by September that year.
This is useful to know before you plan anything. If you want your school or office activity to connect to a government scheme or a district collector's programme, 5 June is the day that will get you a response. Earth Day is the day for the thing you organise yourself.
| Day | Date | What it is used for in India |
|---|---|---|
| Earth Day | 22 April | School and campus events, corporate sustainability days, citizen clean-ups |
| World Environment Day | 5 June | The main official day; ministry campaigns and tree planting. India hosted the global edition in 2018 |
| World Water Day | 22 March | Water ministry campaigns, groundwater and river programmes |
| Van Mahotsav | First week of July | Tree-planting week started in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, timed to the arrival of the monsoon |
| National Pollution Control Day | 2 December | Marks the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster; focuses on industrial safety and air pollution |
Where does India actually stand?
If you are going to say something on Earth Day, it helps to know the numbers rather than repeat slogans.
Forest and tree cover was measured at 8,27,357 square kilometres in the India State of Forest Report 2023, which is 25.17 per cent of the country's area. That figure counts plantations and orchards alongside natural forest, so it is not a measure of forest quality.
Air quality is tracked under the National Clean Air Programme, launched in 2019 and covering 131 cities. The revised target is a 40 per cent cut in PM10 levels, or meeting the national standard, by 2025-26. The government reported that 95 of the 131 cities showed better annual PM10 readings in 2023-24 than in the 2017-18 baseline.
On energy, India reported crossing 50 per cent of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources in 2025, ahead of its 2030 commitment. Read that carefully: installed capacity is what is built, not what is generated. Coal still supplies most of the electricity India actually uses.
What can you actually do on Earth Day?
Choose one thing you will still be doing in June. Earth Day's weakness is that it produces a lot of one-day activity.
- Sort your household waste properly for a month. Wet, dry and hazardous, kept separate, is the single change that most affects what happens at your city's landfill.
- If you plant a tree, arrange who will water it through the first two summers. Saplings planted in April without that arrangement mostly die.
- Fix the leaking tap and the dripping overhead tank float. Domestic water loss in Indian cities is not a minor item.
- Ask your building or office where its dry waste goes, and who takes it. Most people do not know, and the answer is usually the start of a better system.
- If you run a team, make one purchasing change rather than one poster. Switching a single recurring supply is worth more than an awareness email.
Other dates in the same set are worth knowing so that your effort lands where it fits: World Wildlife Day on 3 March, the International Day of Forests on 21 March, and the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May.
What does an honest Earth Day message look like?
Specific, short, and addressed to a person rather than to the planet.
Do
- Name a person and a real action. "Thank you for running the compost bin" beats "let us save the planet".
- Pick one habit and say what you will do, not what everyone should do.
- In an office post, say what your company changed this year, with a number. Anything else reads as advertising.
Avoid
- Don't send a cheerful Earth Day line to someone who has just lost a crop, a home or a family member to a flood, a heatwave or a landslide.
- Don't treat it as an Indian national day. It is an international awareness day with no official programme in India, and 5 June is the day the government marks.
- Don't build a message on a scary figure you have not checked. The data on forests, air and energy is published and it changes every year.
How to wish someone on Earth Day
Earth Day is not a greeting occasion in the way a festival is, and a card that only says "save the planet" reads as noise. What works is naming a person and a real action: the teacher running the school eco club, the neighbour who sorts the building's waste, the colleague who cut the office paper bill, the cousin who gave up a car. Thanks and a specific promise beat slogans. If someone has lost a home or a crop to a flood or a heatwave, do not send them a cheerful line.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions
When is Earth Day in 2027?
Earth Day 2027 falls on Thursday, 22 April 2027.
What is the difference between Earth Day and World Environment Day?
Earth Day, on 22 April, began as a citizens' movement in the United States in 1970 and is run by non-government organisations and schools. World Environment Day, on 5 June, was created by the United Nations Environment Programme and is the day governments run official campaigns, including India's ministry programmes. In India, World Environment Day carries the official weight and Earth Day is mostly marked by schools, campuses and companies.
Is Earth Day a holiday in India?
No. Earth Day is not a gazetted or restricted holiday anywhere in India. Offices, banks and schools stay open, and any observance is voluntary, usually an assembly, a talk, a clean-up or a plantation drive organised by the institution itself.
Why is Earth Day called International Mother Earth Day?
The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 63/278 in 2009, proposed by Bolivia, giving 22 April the official UN name International Mother Earth Day. The older name, Earth Day, is still used by the organisations that run the day's events, so both names refer to the same date.
What is a good Earth Day theme for a school event?
Pick something the students can measure at their own school: how much water the building uses in a week, what happens to the canteen waste, how many trees on the campus survived from last year's planting. Measured projects hold attention better than poster competitions, and they give the school something to compare next year.
What are India's main climate and environment targets?
India has stated a target of net zero emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity by 2030, both announced in the run-up to and at the 2021 Glasgow climate conference. It reported passing 50 per cent of installed capacity from non-fossil sources in 2025, ahead of schedule, though coal still generates most of the electricity actually consumed.
How should I wish someone on Earth Day without sounding preachy?
Thank one person for one thing they already do, and add one change you are making yourself. A message that names the school compost bin, the building's waste segregation or a colleague's work on office supplies lands better than a general appeal to save the planet.
