A birthday message works when it says something only you could have written. Name one real thing about the person or the year they have had, then wish them something specific. Three lines like that beat a paragraph of adjectives, and they are the ones people screenshot and keep.

How can you tell if a birthday message is too generic?

A birthday message is too generic if you could forward it to four other people without changing a word. Read yours back and ask that question. If the answer is yes, it is a greeting, not a message.

Most wishes that fail this test are built entirely out of wishes. Health, happiness, success, prosperity. Those are fine as a closing line. They cannot carry the whole thing. Add one detail from real life and the same message becomes theirs.

Vague: "Happy birthday! Wishing you health, happiness and success in the year ahead."

Theirs: "Happy birthday, Meera. You survived a move, a new team and a broken ankle this year, and still called me every Sunday. Hoping this one is boring in the best way."

A shape that works almost every time: the greeting, one specific thing, one wish that follows from it, and a line about seeing them.

What to write, by who they are to you

Who it's forLead withA line that lands
A parentSomething you have only recently understood about them"I'm getting to the age where I finally see how much you were holding up at 35. Happy birthday, Ma."
A close friendThe running joke, the shared history, the thing nobody else would get"Fifteen years of you picking terrible restaurants. Happy birthday, I'll be at the next one."
A siblingHonesty, gently. Siblings can take the truth"You were an insufferable child and you turned out alright. Proud of you. Happy birthday."
A partnerOne ordinary thing they do, not the grand statement"Happy birthday to the person who still makes chai for two without being asked."
A colleague you know a littleWarmth, without pretending to be close"Happy birthday, Arjun! Hope you get a day with no meetings and an actual lunch break."
Your manager or a seniorRespect, and one thing you have learned from them"Happy birthday, sir. Thank you for backing the Q3 idea when nobody else would."
A childTheir world, in their words"Happy 7th birthday, Aarav! Seven whole years of being the fastest kid on the staircase."
Someone you have drifted fromNo guilt, no explanation, just the door left open"Happy birthday, Nikhil. Thought of you today. Would be good to catch up properly."

Birthday wishes you can send as they are

For a close friend
Happy birthday! ๐ŸŽ‚ Another year of you being the person I call first with good news and bad. Whatever this year throws at you, I'm in. Let's do something loud.
For a parent
Happy birthday, Ma. I don't say it enough: the way you look after everyone, including yourself now, is something I'm still learning from. Let's have a quiet day, your favourite food, no phone calls.
For a sibling
Happy birthday to the one person who remembers every embarrassing thing I've ever done and hasn't used it against me. Yet. Love you. Have a brilliant one.
For a partner
Happy birthday, my love. โค๏ธ I keep thinking about how ordinary days are better because you're in them. Here's to a year of the good kind of ordinary, together.
For a colleague
Happy birthday! ๐ŸŽ‰ Hope you get today off the laptop and someone else brings the cake for once. Good to have you on the team.
For a child
Happy birthday! ๐ŸŽˆ You're officially bigger, louder and faster than last year. Eat too much cake. That's the rule today.
Belated
I'm late and I know it. Happy belated birthday! Hope yesterday was full of people who love you. Celebrating you today instead, if that's allowed.
For a first birthday
Happy 1st birthday, little one! ๐Ÿฅณ One year of tiny socks going missing and the whole house running on your schedule. Wishing you a big, noisy, happy life.

What should you write for a milestone birthday?

For a milestone birthday, write to the stage of life rather than the number. A first birthday is really a message to the parents, who have not slept properly in a year, so say something to them too.

Eighteen, twenty-one and twenty-five are about what is coming, not what has gone. Write about the person they are becoming, and leave out the advice unless they asked for it.

In many Indian families the sixtieth is marked formally. Tamil and Telugu families hold Shashtiabdapoorthi for a parent's 60th and Sathabhishekam at 80, often with a temple visit and a repeat of the wedding rituals. If you are invited to one, a wish addressed to the family rather than only the person usually fits better, and a card the whole family can open works better than a private text.

For a 50th, 60th or 75th, skip the age jokes unless that person makes them first.

Timing, tone and the things to avoid

Midnight birthday calls are normal among close friends and cousins in India. They are not normal for a manager, a client, or an elder you are not close to. For those, send it between 9 and 11 in the morning, when it will actually be read.

Do

  • Use their name. A message that starts with the name is read differently from one that starts with "Happy birthday".
  • Say what you will do, not only what you wish. "I'll call you Sunday" is worth more than "may all your dreams come true".
  • Send late wishes anyway. A message on the 4th is better than no message at all.
  • Write in the language you actually speak to them in, including Hinglish. A card in your own voice beats a polished one that sounds like someone else.

Avoid

  • Don't make the message about you, your busy week, or why you forgot.
  • Don't joke about someone's age, weight or marital status. It reads as affectionate to you and as a jab on a screen.
  • Don't send a birthday wish in a group chat and call it done for someone close to you. Send the group one, then send a real one.
  • Don't open with "Many many happy returns of the day" unless you mean it fondly. It is the most forwarded line in India and it reads as a formality.

If the person lost someone in the past year, their birthday can be heavy. Keep it short and warm, drop the exclamation marks, and say you are thinking of them. A bereavement calls for a condolence note instead, which is a different message entirely.

When the words are right, turn them into a card in about a minute, or look through other occasions if today is about something else.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write in a birthday message?

Write one specific thing about the person or the year they have had, then one wish that follows from it. A message that could be forwarded to anyone else is a greeting, not a birthday wish. Two or three honest lines are enough.

What is a short birthday wish that doesn't sound generic?

Use their name and one detail: "Happy birthday, Riya. Thank you for the 2 a.m. phone calls this year. Hope this one is kinder to you." Naming something real is what separates a short wish from a forwarded one.

Is it okay to send belated birthday wishes?

Yes. Send them without a long apology, because the apology makes the message about you. "I'm late, but I hope yesterday was good to you" is enough, and most people are simply glad you remembered at all.

What should I write for someone's 60th birthday in an Indian family?

Many Tamil and Telugu families mark the 60th with a Shashtiabdapoorthi ceremony, so a wish addressed to the family as well as the person fits the occasion. Mention what they have built rather than their age, and skip jokes about getting old.

What do you write in a birthday message for a colleague you barely know?

Keep it warm and short, and wish them something about their day rather than their life: "Happy birthday, Sana! Hope you get an easy day and an actual lunch break." Avoid inside jokes and anything about their personal life.

Should I send birthday wishes at midnight?

Midnight is normal between close friends, siblings and cousins in India. For a manager, a client or an elder you are not close to, send it mid-morning instead, when it will be read rather than muted.

What do I write for a friend who is going through a hard year?

Drop the exclamation marks and the word "celebrate". Acknowledge the year honestly, wish them an easier one, and offer something concrete: "I know this year took a lot out of you. Happy birthday. I'm around this weekend if you want company."

What is a Kehdoo birthday card?

It's a short animated greeting page for "Happy Birthday". Write or pick a message, add a photo if you want, and Kehdoo turns it into a shareable card at a single link.

Is it free to create and share a birthday card?

Yes. Creating and sharing a card on Kehdoo is free, and you don't need an account to do it.

Can I add a photo to my birthday card?

Yes. You can add a photo during creation, and it's resized and stripped of metadata before it's stored.

How do I share the card once it's ready?

Share the link directly via WhatsApp or your device's native share sheet, copy the link, or download the card as a PNG.

Don't let the words sit inside.
