About World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is marked on 10 September every year, and in 2027 it falls on Friday, 10 September 2027. The International Association for Suicide Prevention started it in 2003, with the World Health Organization as co-sponsor. Hospitals, colleges, helplines and mental health groups mark it. It is not a celebration. The point of the day is to make it easier to ask someone directly whether they are thinking of ending their life, and to tell people where help is.

Most people who are worried about a friend say nothing, because they are afraid the question will plant the idea. Suicide prevention bodies say it does not work that way. Asking plainly is the thing this day is built around.

Why is World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September?

The date was fixed by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), which held the first World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2003. The World Health Organization co-sponsored it from the start and has backed it every year since 2004.

IASP sets a theme for three years at a time rather than one. The theme for 2024 to 2026 is "Changing the narrative on suicide", which asks people to move the subject out of whispers and into ordinary conversation.

WHO's figures give the scale. More than 720,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year, and it is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29, on 2021 data. About 73 per cent of these deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries.

In India, the National Crime Records Bureau recorded 1,71,418 suicides in 2023, a rate of 12.3 per lakh of population. Daily wage earners made up 47,170 of those deaths, the largest single occupational group.

What should you say to someone you are worried about?

Say what you have noticed, ask the question directly, then stop talking and listen. You do not need training and you do not need perfect words. You need to stay in the room.

Do

  • Ask straight out: "Are you thinking of ending your life?" Vague hints let the person dodge.
  • Say what you saw: "You've stopped replying and you look exhausted." Facts are harder to brush off than "Are you okay?"
  • Listen without fixing. Long silences are fine.
  • Offer something specific: "I'll come over at seven", not "Call me anytime".
  • Stay in touch afterwards. The week after someone opens up matters more than the day they did.
  • Help them reach a professional, and offer to sit with them while they call.

Avoid

  • Don't say "Others have it worse" or "Think of your parents". Both land as blame.
  • Don't promise to keep it secret if the person is in danger.
  • Don't argue about religion or morality with someone in crisis.
  • Don't hand over a helpline number and then disappear.
  • Don't ask about or describe methods, online or in person.
If they sayA reply that helpsWhy it works
"I'm fine, don't worry""I'll worry anyway. Can I come by on Sunday?"Keeps the door open without forcing a confession.
"There's no point to any of this""Tell me more about that."Invites the real answer instead of closing it down.
"I've thought about ending it""Thank you for telling me. Are you safe right now?"Treats it as trust, not as a crisis to manage alone.
"I don't want a doctor""Then let's just call 14416 and talk to someone once."Lowers the step from treatment to one phone call.

What does India do about suicide prevention?

India's main service is Tele-MANAS, the national tele-mental health helpline launched in October 2022. Prasar Bharati reported that it was running 51 cells across all states and union territories and had taken more than 10 lakh calls by May 2024. Calls are free, and counsellors work in English, Hindi and many regional languages.

The health ministry published India's first National Suicide Prevention Strategy in November 2022. It sets a target of cutting suicide deaths by 10 per cent by 2030, asks states to open suicide support services in district mental health outpatient departments, and asks schools and colleges to build mental well-being into what they teach.

One legal point is worth knowing, because the fear of it stops people from seeking help. Under Section 115 of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, a person who attempts suicide is presumed to be under severe stress and is not to be tried or punished. Hospitals cannot refuse care or demand a police complaint first.

On the day itself, IASP asks people to light a candle near a window at 8 pm, in support of prevention work and in memory of people who have died. Indian medical colleges, NIMHANS in Bengaluru and state mental health authorities usually hold talks, candle walks and free counselling camps.

What to write on World Suicide Prevention Day

For a friend you are worried about
I've been thinking about you all week. Can I call tonight? You don't have to be okay for us to talk.
For someone who has been unwell
No advice from me today, just this: I'm glad you're here, and I'm not going anywhere.
For a colleague under pressure
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. If work ever gets too heavy, my phone is on, and I mean outside office hours too.
For a family that lost someone to suicide
Thinking of Ravi today, and of all of you. I'd like to come over this weekend if that's alright.
For a parent
I know this year has been hard on you. I'm around this evening if you want company, and happy to just sit.
For a team message at work
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Tele-MANAS is free on 14416, 24 hours. Please save the number, and please use it if you ever need it.
For a student living away from home
Hostel life can get very quiet. Message me at any hour, even if it's only to complain about the mess food.

For related health observances, see World Mental Health Day on 10 October and World Health Day on 7 April. If you are writing to a family after a death, the wording notes on condolence messages may help.

How to wish someone on World Suicide Prevention Day

Nothing on this day should begin with the word Happy. A message that works is short, plain and personal: you have been on my mind, I am around, can I call you tonight. If you are writing to someone who has lost a person to suicide, use the name of the person who died and offer one specific thing you will do. Avoid slogans, avoid advice, and never describe how anyone died.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Frequently asked questions

When is World Suicide Prevention Day in 2027?

World Suicide Prevention Day 2027 falls on Friday, 10 September 2027.

What helpline can I call in India if I am suicidal?

Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416. It is the Government of India's free mental health helpline, run under the National Mental Health Programme and available 24 hours a day in English, Hindi and many regional languages. For an immediate medical emergency, go to the nearest hospital casualty department.

Is it wrong to say "Happy World Suicide Prevention Day"?

Yes. The day exists because of deaths and grief, so no greeting should begin with "Happy". Write something plain instead, such as a note telling a friend you are thinking of them, or a message sharing the helpline number with your team.

Does asking someone about suicide make it more likely?

Suicide prevention organisations say it does not. Asking directly usually comes as a relief, because it gives the person permission to speak about something they have been carrying alone. The bigger risk is saying nothing.

Is attempting suicide a crime in India?

No. Under Section 115 of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, a person who attempts suicide is presumed to be suffering severe stress and is not to be tried or punished. The law also places a duty on the government to provide care and rehabilitation.

What is the Light a Candle activity on World Suicide Prevention Day?

The International Association for Suicide Prevention asks people to light a candle near a window at 8 pm on 10 September. It is a quiet way to show support for prevention work, remember people who have died by suicide, and stand with those they left behind.

What is the theme of World Suicide Prevention Day?

IASP sets one theme for three years rather than changing it every year. The theme running from 2024 to 2026 is "Changing the narrative on suicide", which asks people to speak about suicide openly instead of avoiding the subject.
