About World Health Day

World Health Day is held on 7 April, the date WHO's constitution came into force in 1948, and in 2027 it falls on Wednesday, 7 April 2027. WHO member states chose the date at the first World Health Assembly, and the day has been observed since 1950 around a theme picked each year. In India it is marked with free check-up camps, school talks and health department drives.

World Health Day is WHO's birthday, used every year to push one health problem to the front of the news. It is the broadest of the health days, which makes it the easiest one to waste on slogans and the easiest one to use well.

Why is World Health Day on 7 April?

The WHO constitution was signed on 22 July 1946 by representatives of 61 countries, but it only came into force on 7 April 1948, when the twenty-sixth government ratified it. That is the date the organisation counts as its founding.

Delegates at the first World Health Assembly, which opened in Geneva on 24 June 1948, chose 7 April as World Health Day. The first one was held in 1950, and it has run every year since, each time around a theme.

What is the World Health Day theme?

WHO picks one subject each year and builds its campaign around it. Recent themes show how wide the day can swing.

YearTheme
2020Support Nurses and Midwives
2021Building a fairer, healthier world
2022Our planet, our health
2023Health For All
2024My health, my right
2025Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures
2026Together for health. Stand with science

The theme matters if you are planning an event, because WHO releases free posters and fact sheets for it. For a personal message, the theme is optional.

What does WHO have to do with India?

More than most people assume. WHO's first regional office was the one for South-East Asia, and it has been in New Delhi since December 1948. The region's first members were Afghanistan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand; today it has ten member states and covers about a quarter of the world's people. Its first regional director, Dr Chandra Mani, took office in 1948.

Some of the certificates that region has collected are Indian milestones:

  • India was certified free of guinea-worm disease in 2000.
  • The whole South-East Asia Region, India included, was certified polio-free on 27 March 2014.
  • India was certified free of yaws, a skin and bone infection, in 2016.

How is World Health Day marked in India?

It is a working day, not a holiday. Health departments, medical colleges and district hospitals run free check-up camps, ASHA and anganwadi workers hold village meetings, and schools hold talks and drawing competitions. Offices often use the date for an annual health check or a blood donation drive.

The everyday version of the day is already running. Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the upgraded primary health centres, check adults for blood pressure, diabetes and three cancers free of cost. By 31 October 2025 there were 1,80,906 of them working, and they had handled 41.14 crore teleconsultations, which matters most in places where the nearest doctor is a bus ride away.

What to write on World Health Day

Unlike most health days, this one is not addressed to sick people, so a cheerful line is fine. A specific one is better.

For a parent
Happy World Health Day, Amma. Your check-up is booked for Saturday and I'm taking you, so no excuses this time.
For a friend who works nights
Happy World Health Day. Sleep is the one thing your job keeps stealing. Take the day off you've been postponing.
For a colleague
Happy World Health Day. Let's actually take the lunch break today and walk instead of eating at the desk.
For a doctor or nurse
On World Health Day, thank you for the hours nobody counts. Our family has leaned on you more than once.
For an ASHA worker
Happy World Health Day. The weighing, the follow-ups, the home visits in the heat: our neighbourhood runs on that work.
For a team at work
Happy World Health Day, everyone. Free BP and sugar checks in the meeting room till 4 pm, and no, it does not hurt.

World Health Day sits at the head of a long list of narrower health days: World Cancer Day on 4 February, World Heart Day on 29 September, World Mental Health Day on 10 October and International Day of Yoga on 21 June.

How to wish someone on World Health Day

This is one health day where a warm wish is fine. Nobody is being told they are ill, so "Happy World Health Day" does no harm, though a specific wish lands better: good sleep for a friend on night shifts, a promised walk with a parent, a thank you to a doctor or ASHA worker. Best of all is a message that ends in a plan, such as booking the blood pressure check you have both been putting off.

Why is World Health Day celebrated on 7 April?

What is the World Health Day theme?

WHO announces a theme for each year. The 2026 theme was "Together for health. Stand with science", and the 2025 theme was "Healthy beginnings, hopeful futures". WHO publishes the new theme and its free campaign material a few weeks before 7 April.

No. It is a working day. Government hospitals, medical colleges and health departments hold free camps and awareness events, but offices, schools and banks stay open.

Can I say "Happy World Health Day"?

Yes. World Health Day is not tied to one illness or to mourning, so a cheerful greeting is fine. It works better when paired with something concrete, such as offering to book a check-up or go for a walk together.

Where is WHO's office for India?

WHO's regional office for South-East Asia has been in New Delhi since December 1948, and it was the organisation's first regional office. WHO also has a country office for India in Delhi that works with the union health ministry and the states.

What can an office or school do on World Health Day?

Arrange free blood pressure, blood sugar and eye checks on the premises, invite a doctor for a short talk, or organise a blood donation camp with a licensed blood centre. Schools often use the day for lessons on handwashing, nutrition and vaccination.
