About World Heart Day
World Heart Day is marked on 29 September every year, and in 2027 it falls on Wednesday, 29 September 2027. The World Heart Federation started it in 2000 with the World Health Organization. Hospitals, workplaces and schools use the day for free blood pressure and sugar checks, walks and talks. WHO's India office says diseases of the heart and blood vessels cause about one-third of all deaths in the country.
High blood pressure is the reason this day exists in the form it does. It causes no pain, no symptoms and no warning, and the first sign is often the heart attack itself. A blood pressure check takes under a minute and is free at most government health centres.
Why is World Heart Day on 29 September?
The World Heart Federation, a Geneva-based body of national heart associations, created World Heart Day in 2000 in partnership with the World Health Organization, to make the point that heart and blood vessel disease kills more people than anything else. The date has been fixed at 29 September, which lets schools, hospitals and employers plan camps and talks on the same day every year.
The federation picks a theme each year. For 2026 it is "Don't Miss a Beat", which asks people to learn the warning signs of heart trouble instead of waiting for a check-up they keep postponing. The federation also points out that more than 80 per cent of deaths from heart and blood vessel disease are linked to risks that can be prevented or treated.
How serious is heart disease in India?
WHO's India office says diseases of the heart and blood vessels are behind roughly one-third of all deaths in the country, and that on 2016 figures they caused 45 per cent of deaths among people aged 40 to 69. That middle number is the one worth repeating at home: this is not only an old-age illness in India.
The ICMR-INDIAB survey, a national study of more than 1.1 lakh adults published in 2023, found high blood pressure in 35.5 per cent of Indian adults. WHO India puts the control rate far lower than the detection rate: at least one in four adults has high blood pressure, and only about 12 per cent have it under control.
That gap is what the India Hypertension Control Initiative was set up to close. It is run by the health ministry with the Indian Council of Medical Research, WHO India and Resolve to Save Lives. By April 2022 it had grown from 25 to 100 districts and enrolled more than 25 lakh patients across over 15,000 health facilities. WHO India notes that treatment in the public system costs as little as about Rs 200 per patient a year.
Under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, started in 2010, district NCD clinics offer free tests and free medicines for heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and health workers screen people aged 30 and above in the community.
| What to check | How often for a healthy adult | Where you can get it |
|---|---|---|
| Blood pressure | At least once a year, more often if a parent or sibling has it | Any government health centre, NCD clinic or chemist with a monitor |
| Blood sugar | Once a year from age 30, earlier if there is family history | Free under the NP-NCD screening for people aged 30 and above |
| Waist size | Whenever you buy trousers | At home, with a tape, at the level of the navel |
| Tobacco and alcohol use | Honestly, once | Your own answer; the quit line and NCD clinic counsellors follow up |
What can you actually do on World Heart Day?
- Book one checkFix a date for a blood pressure and blood sugar test, for yourself and for one older relative. A camp on the day makes it easier to go together.
- Learn the warning signsChest pressure, pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, sudden breathlessness, cold sweat. In women these can be milder and easy to dismiss as acidity.
- Know where to goFind the nearest hospital with a 24-hour casualty and cardiac care unit before you need it. Save the number.
- Change one habit, not fiveWalking 30 minutes most days, cutting salt at the table, or stopping tobacco. One change you keep beats five you abandon.
- Learn CPRMany hospitals and fire services run free sessions around the day. Hands-only chest compressions are enough for an untrained bystander to start.
Hospitals across India use the date for free blood pressure, cholesterol and ECG camps, and for early morning walkathons. District NCD clinics and health and wellness centres run screening drives, and many offices bring in a cardiologist for a half-hour talk. If you want a camp near you, the government health centre in your block is usually the cheapest and least crowded option.
What to write on World Heart Day
World Heart Day sits alongside World Diabetes Day on 14 November and World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, since the three share most of the same risks. See also World Health Day on 7 April and International Day of Yoga on 21 June.
How to wish someone on World Heart Day
A World Heart Day wish lands better when it asks for one small action instead of praising good health. Name the person and the thing you want them to do: book the check-up, take the evening walk, cut the second cigarette. For a parent or an older relative, offering to go along to the clinic is worth more than any message. Keep it light, skip the lecture, and do not frighten someone who is already a patient.

Who started World Heart Day and why?

The World Heart Federation sets a new theme each year. For 2026 the theme is "Don't Miss a Beat", which asks people to recognise the signs of heart trouble and act on them rather than waiting.
How common is heart disease in India?
WHO's India office says heart and blood vessel disease accounts for about one-third of all deaths in India, and that on 2016 figures it caused 45 per cent of deaths among people aged 40 to 69. High blood pressure, found in 35.5 per cent of adults by the ICMR-INDIAB survey published in 2023, is the largest single risk.
Where can I get a free heart check-up in India?

What should I gift someone on World Heart Day?
Something that gets used: a home blood pressure monitor for a parent, a good pair of walking shoes, or simply booking and paying for a check-up. Sweets and rich food are the usual gift reflex in India and the wrong one here.
Is World Heart Day a holiday in India?
No. It is an observance, not a public holiday, so offices, schools and banks work as usual. Many of them mark it during working hours with health camps, walks or talks by a visiting doctor.
