About Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram Statehood Day
Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram Statehood Day marks 20 February 1987, when both northeastern union territories became full states of India on the same day, Mizoram as the 23rd and Arunachal Pradesh as the 24th. It is a state holiday in both states, and in 2027 it falls on Saturday, 20 February 2027.
Two states share a birthday on 20 February, but they reached it by different roads. Mizoram's statehood was the final clause of a peace settlement. Arunachal Pradesh's was the last step in a long administrative journey from a frontier tract run from Shillong to a state with its own legislature in Itanagar.
Why do Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram share a Statehood Day?
Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram share a Statehood Day because Parliament raised both union territories to full statehood with effect from 20 February 1987. Mizoram's statehood came through the Constitution (Fifty-third Amendment) Act and the State of Mizoram Act, 1986. Arunachal Pradesh's came through the Constitution (Fifty-fifth Amendment) Act and the State of Arunachal Pradesh Act, 1986. Mizoram became the 23rd state of India and Arunachal the 24th.
Both had been separated from Assam's administration and made union territories in January 1972, which is why their histories are so often told together.

How did Mizoram become a state?
Mizoram became a state as a direct result of the Mizoram Peace Accord, signed on 30 June 1986 by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's government and Laldenga, leader of the Mizo National Front. The movement had its roots in the Mautam famine of 1959, when bamboo flowering brought a plague of rats that destroyed crops. A relief group formed during the famine, the Mizo National Famine Front, turned into a political party, the Mizo National Front, in 1961. On 1 March 1966 the MNF declared independence, beginning an armed insurgency that lasted two decades. The Indian government's response included air strikes on Aizawl, the only time India has bombed its own territory from the air.
The accord ended the insurgency. The MNF gave up arms, and within months Mizoram was a state with Laldenga as its first Chief Minister. Mizoram marks the accord's anniversary separately each year on 30 June as Remna Ni, Peace Day. The Mizo settlement is often cited as one of the few Indian insurgencies to end in a lasting peace.
How did Arunachal Pradesh become a state?
Arunachal Pradesh became a state after moving step by step from a frontier tract to a union territory. The British administered its hills as frontier tracts; after independence they were grouped as the North-East Frontier Agency in 1954, governed from Shillong through the Governor of Assam. In January 1972 NEFA was renamed Arunachal Pradesh, "land of the dawn-lit mountains", and made a union territory. Statehood followed in 1987, and Gegong Apang, who had led the territory's government since 1980, became the first Chief Minister of the new state.
Arunachal Pradesh has around 23 major tribes and more than 100 sub-tribes, among them the Nyishi, Adi, Galo, Apatani, Monpa, Mishmi and Tangsa. With so many languages in use, English is the official language and a local form of Hindi serves as the common tongue between communities. Dong village, in Anjaw district, sees the first sunrise in India.
How is Statehood Day marked?
Statehood Day is a state holiday in both Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, and government offices, schools and banks are closed. The pattern is similar in both capitals.
- Aizawl: the state-level function is held at the Assam Rifles Ground, with the national flag unfurled at government offices, businesses and many homes. An annual football tournament is also played to mark the day.
- Itanagar: the state government holds the main function in the capital, where the Governor and Chief Minister speak and cultural troupes from different communities perform.
- Elsewhere: people from both states living in Delhi, Bengaluru, Guwahati and other cities often hold community gatherings, and national leaders post greetings to both states.
The day is civic rather than festive. Big celebrations in these states belong to their own festivals: Chapchar Kut in Mizoram, and in Arunachal Losar, Solung, Mopin, Nyokum and many others. Arunachal also observes Indigenous Faith Day on 1 December.
What to write on Statehood Day
A Statehood Day message lands when it names the state and something real about it. For Mizoram, peace and the accord of 1986 give it weight. For Arunachal, the diversity of its tribes and its place as the first land in India to see the sun are natural themes. About 87 per cent of Mizoram's people are Christian, and a blessing is natural between friends, but keep workplace messages neutral.
Do
- Name the state you mean; people from Arunachal and Mizoram are not interchangeable "Northeasterners".
- Mention the 1986 Peace Accord or Remna Ni when writing to someone from Mizoram.
- Use the tribe or community name if you know it, and spell it correctly.
Avoid
- Don't describe either state as remote, exotic or "India's hidden gem".
- Avoid bringing border disputes into a greeting.
- Don't assume a shared language or religion across the region.
Neighbouring states have their own days: see Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura Statehood Day on 21 January and Nagaland Statehood Day on 1 December.
How to wish someone on Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram Statehood Day
A good Statehood Day wish is addressed to one state, not to "the Northeast". Mizoram's statehood came out of the 1986 peace accord that ended twenty years of insurgency, so peace is the natural theme there. Arunachal's has more to do with its many tribes and the dawn-lit hills it is named for. Keep the tone proud and local, and avoid treating either state as exotic or remote.
