About New Job

A new job marks someone moving to a new employer or a new role, usually one to three months after they accept the offer, because the joining date waits out a notice period. Friends and colleagues mark it twice, once when the offer is accepted and again on the night before the first day. There is no fixed date; it is whatever joining date the appointment letter names.

In India the news of a new job almost never arrives on the day the job starts. Notice periods come from the appointment letter rather than from any single national law, and while 30 days is common in smaller firms, 60 or 90 days is standard in IT, consulting and large corporates. Someone who tells you in March may not sit at that desk until June.

That gap is the most useful thing to know when you are wishing them.

Send two messages, not one

The first goes the day they tell you. It is about relief more than celebration: the search is over, the interview rounds are over, the wait for the offer letter is over.

The second goes the night before they join, when the nerves arrive. Almost nobody sends this one, which is exactly why it lands.

A third rule matters more than either. Many people will not announce anything until the relieving letter is in hand and background verification has cleared, because offers do get withdrawn. If someone has told you privately, keep it private until they post it themselves.

A first job is not a fifth job

The same three words do very different work depending on where the person is standing. Over a crore students finish a degree in India each year, going by the Ministry of Education's All India Survey on Higher Education, so a first job is one of a very large cohort and it feels like it. A fifth job is a calculated risk taken alone.

The moveWhat they are actually feelingWrite aboutLeave out
First job after collegeWhether they will be found outThe team they will meet, and that nobody expects them to know anything yetAdvice about office politics
Second or third jobThat they might have jumped too earlyThe specific skill they are taking with them"Why so soon?"
Leaving after five or more yearsGrief, honestly. That desk was a lifeWhat they built there, and that it will outlast them"You should have moved years ago"
A pay cut for better workDoubt, and other people's opinionsThe nerve it took, without calling it a gambleAnything about money
Joining after a layoff or a gapRelief so large it is hard to showThat the gap was circumstance, not a verdict"Everything happens for a reason"
Back after a career breakOut of practice, and watchedConfidence, and that the first fortnight always feels like this"Hope you can manage both"
A government job after years of preparationThe weight of the attempts before this oneThe years, and the family who waited them outJokes about sarkari work
Moving city for the jobLogistics, not gloryThe city, the flat, the first weekend thereRent and traffic warnings

One detail sits behind the third row. Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, gratuity becomes payable after five years of continuous service, at fifteen days' wages for every completed year. That is why a long stay in India often ends a few months after the fifth anniversary, and why the person leaving may be more sentimental about that office than you expect.

Messages you can send

For a first job
All the best for Monday. Nobody expects you to know anything for the first three months, so ask everything twice and write it down. You've got the part that can't be taught. Call me after day one.
For a close friend
So the search is over. 🎉 I heard about every round of this one and I'm genuinely glad. Whatever you do, take a few days off between the last day and the first day. You've earned a gap.
For a colleague leaving your team
Two years of you catching things nobody else caught. The new place has no idea what's arriving. Congratulations, and this doesn't change anything, I'm still messaging you about the cricket.
For a cousin or younger sibling
Congratulations on the offer! 💼 Mum told me before you did, obviously. Very proud of you. The first month is meant to be confusing, so don't read anything into it.
For someone joining after a long gap
Congratulations. The gap was circumstances, not a comment on you, and anyone who reads a CV properly knows that. Wishing you a team that gives you room for the first few weeks.
For an elder or a senior
Congratulations on the new position, sir. Heard the news from Amma. Wishing you a good team and an easy joining. Do let us know once you've settled in.
For someone who took a pay cut
Congratulations, and honestly, respect. Choosing the work over the number is a harder call than people admit. Hope it turns out to be exactly what you wanted.
For a first job in a new city
All the best for the move and the job. 🌏 Wishing you a flat with decent light and one colleague who becomes a friend by week two. Tell me the neighbourhood and I'll send food recommendations.

How do Indian families mark the first day of a new job?

Plenty of Indian families treat the joining date of a new job as an occasion in its own right. New clothes bought for day one. A stop at a temple, church, dargah or gurudwara on the way. Sweets carried to the office, or handed round at home in the evening. In many Hindu households the date itself is checked against the panchang where the employer allows a choice, which is one reason an offer letter sometimes comes back with a request to shift the joining by two days.

The first salary carries its own customs. Giving a part of it to parents, putting something in the hundi or donation box, and standing a treat for friends are all common, though none of it is a rule and plenty of people do none of it. If you know the family marks it, a message on first-salary day is unusual and welcome.

Do

  • Ask what the role actually involves. People are tired of being congratulated on a company name.
  • Offer one concrete thing: a contact in that office, a place to stay for the first week, a lift on day one.
  • Message again at the end of the first week. That is when the doubt turns up.
  • For a first job, say plainly that not knowing things is the job for now.

Avoid

  • Don't ask the package, the hike percentage, or whether there was a counter-offer.
  • Don't ask why they left the last place, especially in a group chat.
  • Don't forward the news to anyone before they have announced it.
  • Don't call it "settling down" or "a safe choice". Neither reads as a compliment.

If the person is leaving your team rather than joining it, the send-off has its own etiquette, covered on farewell. For the general rules of congratulating good news, see congratulations messages, and for send-off wording, best wishes messages. If the move came with a step up in title, promotion fits better, and for someone finishing college first, graduation.

How to wish someone on New Job

A good new-job wish is about the person, not the company logo. Name what the search cost them, say one thing they are good at, and wish them something small and reachable: a manager who notices work, one friend by the second week. Keep salary, designation and notice-period gossip out of it. For a first job, the most useful line you can write is permission to not know things yet.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Language tip: English, Hindi + regional language.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write to someone starting a new job?

Write about the person rather than the company. Name what the search took, mention one thing they are good at, and wish them something small and reachable, such as a manager who notices work or one friend by the second week. Send it again the night before they join.

When should I send a new job wish in India?

Twice. Once when they tell you about the offer, and once the evening before their joining date, which is often two or three months later because of the notice period. The second message is the one almost nobody sends.

Is it rude to ask about salary when someone gets a new job?

In most Indian workplaces and families it lands badly, even between close friends. Ask what the role involves, who they will work with, or where the office is. If they want to tell you the number, they will.

What do I write to someone joining their first job?

Tell them that not knowing things is expected for the first few months and that asking questions is the job. Wish them a team that is generous with its time, and skip advice about office politics, which nobody can use before day one.

How do I congratulate someone who took a pay cut for a new job?

Acknowledge the choice without calling it a risk or a gamble. A line like "choosing the work over the number takes more nerve than people admit" respects the decision. Avoid any mention of money, and do not offer a second opinion they did not ask for.

Can I post about a friend's new job before they announce it?

No. Many people wait for the relieving letter and background verification before going public, and an early post can reach their current employer. Wait until they have announced it themselves, then add yours.
