About Jharkhand Foundation Day
Jharkhand Foundation Day, or Jharkhand Sthapna Diwas, marks 15 November 2000, when Jharkhand was carved out of southern Bihar as India's 28th state. The date was chosen because it is the birth anniversary of the Adivasi leader Birsa Munda, now also kept nationally as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 15 November 2026.
Jharkhand means the land of forests. The state that took the name in 2000 was the result of one of the longest regional movements in modern India, and its birthday is shared with the man its Adivasi communities call Dharti Aba, father of the earth.
Why is Jharkhand Foundation Day celebrated on 15 November?
Jharkhand Foundation Day falls on 15 November because Birsa Munda was born on that day in 1875, in the village of Ulihatu in what is now Khunti district. When the state was created in 2000, its founding was timed to his birth anniversary.
Birsa Munda led the Ulgulan, the great tumult, against British rule and the loss of Munda land to outsiders. Around Christmas 1899 some 7,000 people gathered, and the rising spread across Khunti, Tamar, Basia and Ranchi. Its best-remembered clash came at Dombari Buru hill near Ulihatu on 9 January 1900, where a memorial pillar now stands. Birsa died in Ranchi jail on 9 June 1900, aged 24. Eight years later the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908 restricted the transfer of tribal land to non-tribals, a direct answer to the grievances his movement raised.
Since 2021, the Government of India has also marked 15 November as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, a national day honouring tribal freedom fighters. So the same date carries a state birthday, a national tribal day and Birsa Munda's jayanti, and many people in Jharkhand mark all three.
How did Jharkhand become a separate state?
Jharkhand became a state after a demand that ran for more than seventy years, led first by Adivasi organisations and later by a wider coalition.
- 1928Memorandum to the Simon Commission
The Chotanagpur Unnati Samaj asks for a separate province for the region.
- 1939Adivasi Mahasabha
Jaipal Singh Munda, captain of India's 1928 Olympic hockey team, founds it and later leads the Jharkhand Party.
- 1952First elections
The Jharkhand Party wins 32 seats in the Bihar Assembly; it merges with the Congress in 1963.
- 1972Jharkhand Mukti Morcha
Shibu Soren, Binod Bihari Mahato and others found the JMM, widening the movement beyond tribal groups.
- 1986All Jharkhand Students Union
Students revive the agitation over land and identity.
- Aug 2000Bihar Reorganisation Act
Lok Sabha passes the Bill on 2 August and Rajya Sabha on 11 August.
- 15 Nov 2000Statehood
Eighteen districts of southern Bihar form Jharkhand; Babulal Marandi is sworn in as first Chief Minister.
Jaipal Singh Munda, known as Marang Gomke, the great leader, also sat in the Constituent Assembly, where he argued forcefully for Adivasi rights. The new state received 81 assembly seats, 14 Lok Sabha seats and six Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar's total.
What should you know about Jharkhand today?
Jharkhand has its capital at Ranchi and a sub-capital at Dumka, with 24 districts today. It produces more than 40 per cent of India's minerals, yet remains one of the poorer states, a contrast economists often point to. Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, Parasnath hill and the Rajrappa temple draw pilgrims from across the country.
Hindi is the official language, and the state gives official status to more than a dozen others, including Santali, Mundari, Ho, Kurukh, Khortha and Nagpuri.
| Part of life | In Jharkhand |
|---|---|
| Festivals | Sarhul in spring, when sal flowers are offered at the sacred grove; Karam, around a branch of the karam tree; Sohrai, the cattle festival at Diwali time; Tusu and Jitia |
| Dance | Jhumair, Chhau, Domkach and Paika, to dhol and shehnai |
| Food | Dhuska and pitha; rice, dal and tubers as staples; handia, a rice beer, in many Adivasi homes |
| Art | Sohrai wall painting in courtyards and on house walls; godna tattooing |
Sarhul goes by other names too: Baha Parab for the Santals, Baa Parab for Munda and Ho communities, and Khaddi for the Kurukh. Using the right name for your friend's community is a small courtesy that is noticed.
How is Jharkhand Foundation Day marked, and what should you write?
The Jharkhand government marks the day with an official function and cultural programmes, and many people pay tribute to Birsa Munda at his statues and at his birthplace, Ulihatu. Families and people from Jharkhand living elsewhere often mark it with regional food and music. A good wish can honour both the state and the man whose birthday it shares.
Do
- Mention Birsa Munda with respect; for many families the day is his jayanti first.
- Use "Johar" if you know the person uses it; it is the everyday greeting of many in the state.
- Name a real place, festival or dish rather than writing a generic line about "culture".
Avoid
- Don't reduce Adivasi life to costume or dance in images and messages.
- Don't use the day to argue about mining, land or party politics in a greeting.
- Johar
- A common greeting in Jharkhand, used across communities.
- Ulgulan
- The great tumult: Birsa Munda's uprising of 1899–1900.
- Dharti Aba
- Father of the earth, the title Birsa Munda's followers gave him.
- Marang Gomke
- Great leader, the title given to Jaipal Singh Munda.
- Sarna
- The sacred grove where Sarhul offerings are made.
Jharkhand was the last of three states formed in November 2000. The others were Chhattisgarh, marked on Chhattisgarh Rajyotsava on 1 November, and Uttarakhand, marked on Uttarakhand Foundation Day on 9 November. Bihar marks its own birthday on Bihar Day in March.
How to wish someone on Jharkhand Foundation Day
A Jharkhand Foundation Day wish holds two things at once: pride in the state and respect for Birsa Munda and the Adivasi struggle behind it. Name something real, such as Sarhul, the sal forests, a hometown or a dish, and keep the tone warm without politics. "Johar" is the greeting many people from the state use, and it suits the day.
