About International Youth Day
International Youth Day is a United Nations observance on 12 August, which in 2027 falls on Thursday, 12 August 2027. The General Assembly fixed the date in 1999 through resolution 54/120, following a recommendation from a world conference of youth ministers held in Lisbon in 1998, and the first observance was in 2000. It is a policy day about work, education, health and a say in decisions, not a celebration of being young.
India talks about its young population as a permanent advantage. The statistics office does not agree, and that makes 12 August a more interesting date than the average awareness day.
Why is International Youth Day on 12 August?
The date comes from a meeting, not a movement. The World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth met in Lisbon from 8 to 12 August 1998 and recommended that 12 August, the closing day, be declared International Youth Day. The United Nations General Assembly endorsed that recommendation in resolution 54/120 in December 1999, and the first observance was held on 12 August 2000.
The UN counts youth as people aged 15 to 24 for statistical purposes, and puts that group at nearly 1.3 billion worldwide, the largest such generation so far. India uses a wider band. The National Youth Policy of 2014 defines youth as 15 to 29, and a draft revision was circulated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2023.
Each year the UN announces a theme, published on its International Youth Day page. Check it there before you print a banner, because the theme changes annually and old graphics circulate for years.
How many young people does India have, and for how long?
This is the part most Indian speeches get wrong. Youth aged 15 to 29 were 27.5 per cent of India's population at the 2011 Census, about 33 crore people. But the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's Youth in India 2022 report shows the share peaking and then falling: 27.2 per cent in 2021, down to a projected 22.7 per cent by 2036. In absolute numbers the youth population is projected to slip from about 37.1 crore in 2021 to 34.6 crore in 2036, while the share of people over 60 climbs towards 14.9 per cent.
The practical meaning is a deadline. The years in which India has an unusually large working-age population are counted, and whether they turn into anything depends on schooling, skills and jobs in that window.
What youth programmes does India actually run?
Four of them account for most of what a young person in India can join without paying a fee.
| Programme | What it is | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| NCC, the National Cadet Corps | Uniformed training in schools and colleges, with camps, drill and certificates that carry weight in defence recruitment | School and college students who enrol in a unit |
| NSS, the National Service Scheme | Community service through colleges, including village camps, blood donation drives and literacy work | College and senior school students |
| NYKS, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan | District-level youth clubs, mostly rural, running sports, awareness and volunteering activities | Rural youth, largely outside the college system |
| Mera Yuva Bharat, or MY Bharat | An autonomous body launched on 31 October 2023 with an online platform matching young volunteers to programmes and internships | Ages 15 to 29 |
How to mark International Youth Day usefully
- Open one doorMake the introduction you have been meaning to make. For a first-generation graduate, one contact is worth more than a motivational assembly.
- Give real feedbackRead a young person's CV or portfolio properly and tell them what is weak. Vague encouragement wastes their month.
- Pay internsIf your organisation takes students, pay them something and give them work that is not photocopying.
- Hand over the micIf you are running a youth day event, let young people set the agenda and speak. An adult panel on youth issues is the standard mistake.
- Talk about mental healthExam pressure, joblessness and family expectations are the common load. Tele-MANAS, the free national helpline, is on 14416.
What to write on International Youth Day
Do
- Say what they have done. Young people are tired of being told about their potential.
- Offer one concrete thing: a contact, a review, a reference, an hour.
- In a public post, name the programme or opening you are pointing at, so someone can actually use it.
Avoid
- Don't call them the future of the nation. They are living in the present of it, mostly job-hunting.
- Don't use the day to lecture about discipline, phones or the good old days.
- Don't confuse International Youth Day with National Youth Day on 12 January. A school notice that mixes them is embarrassing.

How to wish someone on International Youth Day
A message on this day should sound like something you would say to a young person, not about them. Skip the lines about being the future of the nation. Name what a young person has actually built, learned or handled, and if you are in a position to help, offer the specific help: an introduction, a recommendation, an hour to look over their CV.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Frequently asked questions
When is International Youth Day in 2027?
International Youth Day 2027 falls on Thursday, 12 August 2027.
Why is International Youth Day on 12 August?
It marks the closing day of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon from 8 to 12 August 1998, where ministers recommended an international youth day. The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the date in resolution 54/120 in December 1999, and the first observance was in 2000.
What age counts as youth?
The United Nations counts people aged 15 to 24 as youth for statistical purposes. India uses a wider range: the National Youth Policy of 2014 defines youth as those aged 15 to 29, which is also the age band used by the Mera Yuva Bharat platform.
Is International Youth Day the same as National Youth Day in India?
No. National Youth Day is observed in India on 12 January, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. International Youth Day is the United Nations observance on 12 August. They have different origins and different themes.
How many young people are there in India?
Youth aged 15 to 29 were about 33 crore people, or 27.5 per cent of the population, at the 2011 Census. The government's Youth in India 2022 report projects the share falling to about 22.7 per cent by 2036, with the absolute number also declining after 2021.
What should a school do on International Youth Day?
Hand the programme to students. Let them choose the theme, run the session and speak, rather than listening to adults talk about youth. Career guidance stalls, mental health sessions and information on NCC, NSS, NYKS and MY Bharat are more useful than a speech competition.
What should I write to a young person on this day?
Name something they have actually done, and offer one piece of specific help such as an introduction, a reference or an honest review of their work. Avoid telling them they are the future of the country, which is the line most young people say they hear too often.
