About International Human Solidarity Day
International Human Solidarity Day is a United Nations observance on 20 December. The General Assembly created it in 2005, three years after setting up the World Solidarity Fund, to argue that ending poverty is a shared responsibility rather than an act of generosity. It is barely marked in India outside classrooms and UN offices. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 20 December 2026.
What is International Human Solidarity Day?
International Human Solidarity Day is a United Nations day held on 20 December. The General Assembly created it by resolution 60/209 in 2005. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 20 December 2026.
It grew out of the Millennium Declaration, which listed solidarity as one of the fundamental values that should shape relations between countries in the 21st century. The practical piece behind it is the World Solidarity Fund, set up by resolution 57/265 in 2002 and later run as a trust fund under the UN Development Programme, meant to pay for poverty work in the poorest places.
Be honest about its profile. This is one of the quieter UN days. In India you will find it in a school assembly, a college seminar or a UN office post, and almost nowhere else. There is no ritual, no holiday, no traditional greeting.
What does solidarity mean, and how is it different from charity?
Charity is something you give downwards. Solidarity is something you do alongside. The difference sounds academic until you watch the two in practice.
| Charity | Solidarity |
|---|---|
| Helps a person survive a problem | Tries to remove the thing causing the problem |
| The giver decides what is needed | The people affected decide, and others back them |
| Ends when the donation ends | Lasts as long as the fight does |
| Creates gratitude | Creates equals |
| Example: paying a family's hospital bill | Example: getting the hospital to publish its rates |
Neither is better in every situation. A family whose house has burnt down needs money this week, not an organising committee. But a page about solidarity should say plainly that the UN day is about the second column: shared responsibility, not generosity.
Does India have its own word for this?
India has several, and one of them sits at the top of the Constitution. The Preamble, adopted on 26 November 1949, promises to promote fraternity among all citizens, linking it directly to the dignity of the individual.
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation
In everyday life the clearest example is langar, the free kitchen at every gurdwara, where anyone may sit in the same row and eat the same food regardless of faith, caste or wealth. The seating is the point. Guru Amar Das made visitors eat in the common row before they could meet him, precisely to break the rule that people of different castes could not eat together. The same institution stretched during the Covid years, when gurdwaras ran oxygen langars in Delhi, handing out free oxygen cylinders to patients.
Trade unions, farmer unions, disability rights groups and disaster relief networks in India all use the same idea under different names. So do neighbourhood groups that fund a watchman's child's schooling or keep a local dialysis centre running.
How can you mark International Human Solidarity Day?
Pick something ongoing rather than something ceremonial.
- Pay the people around you properly and on time, including domestic workers, delivery riders and contract staff in your own office.
- Support a group run by the people it serves, not for them: a workers' collective, a self-help group, a parents' association.
- Learn what your city's municipal grievance system is and help one neighbour use it.
- If your company has a CSR budget, ask whether it funds anything that gives people a say, or only things that give them goods.
What to write on International Human Solidarity Day
Short and unsentimental. This is not a wishing day, so messages here are the kind you would send a team or a group, not a card.
Do
- Say what you will do, with a date, rather than what you believe.
- Name the people you are standing with, and let them describe their own situation.
- Keep it in ordinary language. Nobody outside a conference speaks in UN vocabulary.
Avoid
- Don't post a quote about unity over a stock photograph and call it a day.
- Don't speak on behalf of a community you are not part of.
- Don't wish someone a happy solidarity day.
How to wish someone on International Human Solidarity Day
Almost nobody sends a card for this one, and a "Happy Human Solidarity Day" message will read as odd. Use the date instead to say something true to a team, a neighbourhood group or a colleague who is having a bad year. Solidarity means standing with someone as an equal, so write as one, and offer something specific rather than sympathy.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

Frequently asked questions
When is International Human Solidarity Day in 2026?
International Human Solidarity Day 2026 falls on Sunday, 20 December 2026.
Why is International Human Solidarity Day on 20 December?
The UN General Assembly fixed 20 December when it created the day in resolution 60/209 in 2005. The date has no historical anniversary attached to it; it was chosen to give the World Solidarity Fund, set up in 2002, an annual focus.
What is the World Solidarity Fund?
The World Solidarity Fund is a UN fund created by General Assembly resolution 57/265 in 2002 to help eradicate poverty and support human and social development in the poorest countries. It was later established as a trust fund of the UN Development Programme.
What is the difference between solidarity and charity?
Charity gives a person what they lack right now. Solidarity means standing with people as equals to change the situation that made them lack it, with the people affected deciding what is needed. The UN day is about the second.
Is International Human Solidarity Day a holiday in India?
No. It is a UN observance with no holiday, no official programme in most states and very little public marking in India. Schools and colleges that note it usually do so through a seminar or an assembly talk.
What should I post on International Human Solidarity Day?
Something specific you are doing rather than a quote about unity. A commitment with a date, a link to a workers' or residents' group that needs support, or a plain statement of what your team will change works better than a graphic.
