About International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons is a United Nations observance held every 1 October, which in 2027 falls on Friday, 1 October 2027. The General Assembly designated it in 1990 by resolution 45/106 and it was first marked in 1991. It draws attention to the rights, health, income and dignity of older people. In India it is also called World Elders Day, and it comes the day before Gandhi Jayanti.
India is getting old faster than it is getting rich, and 1 October is the day the numbers behind that are read out loud. For most families, though, the day is simpler: it is a reason to call the person you keep meaning to call.
What is the International Day of Older Persons?
The United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons in 1990, through resolution 45/106, and the first observance was in 1991. Two documents give the day its content. The United Nations Principles for Older Persons, adopted in 1991, set out five headings: independence, participation, care, self-fulfilment and dignity. The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted in 2002, is the fuller policy framework that most national ageing programmes still refer to.
The scale the UN is describing has changed sharply. People aged 60 and over went from about 541 million in 1995 to 1.2 billion in 2025, and are projected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050. Global life expectancy reached 73.5 years in 2025, about 8.6 years higher than in 1995.
How fast is India ageing?
Faster than most people assume. Older people were 8.6 per cent of India's population at the 2011 Census, about 103 million. The UNFPA India Ageing Report of 2023 projects that share to cross 20 per cent by 2050, roughly 319 million people, and expects the number of Indians over 60 to overtake the number of children under 15 by about 2046. The fastest-growing group is the oldest, those above 80.
The uncomfortable parts of that report matter more than the headline. More than 40 per cent of older Indians are in the poorest wealth group, and close to 19 per cent report no income of their own. Older women outnumber older men and a large share of them are widows, often with no property in their own name and no pension history. Kerala shows the other end of the same story: a woman there who reaches 60 can expect around 22 more years of life, about four more than a man.
What rights do older people have in India?
Quite a lot on paper, and most families have never read any of it. This is the short version worth keeping.
| What it is | What it gives an older person |
|---|---|
| Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 | A legal right to claim maintenance from children or heirs, including sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, through a district tribunal that must usually decide within 90 days. Abandoning a senior citizen is a punishable offence |
| Elderline 14567 | A free national helpline run under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for pension queries, counselling, legal help, rescue and reporting elder abuse |
| Ayushman Vay Vandana card | Health cover of up to five lakh rupees a year for everyone aged 70 and above, launched on 29 October 2024, with no income condition attached |
| Senior citizen concessions | Higher income tax exemption limits, higher interest on bank deposits at many banks, separate queues at banks and government offices, priority in courts in some cases |
How to mark the day with your own family
- Do the medical calendarBook the annual check-up, refill the regular medicines, write the specialist appointments on one sheet stuck inside a cupboard door.
- Fix the house, not the personGrab bars in the bathroom, a night light in the corridor, no loose rugs, a phone with large buttons. Most elderly hospital admissions in India start with a fall.
- Teach one digital skillVideo calling, UPI safety, how to spot a fraud call. Teach slowly and write the steps down.
- Sort the paperwork togetherPension records, bank nominees, Ayushman card, property documents, a list of medicines and allergies.
- Record their storyAn hour of audio about their childhood and their working life. Grandchildren will want it, and there is a deadline on it.
What to write on the International Day of Older Persons
Do
- Call rather than message. Many older people read slowly on a phone and would rather hear you.
- Ask about their life, not only their health. "What was your first salary?" gets a better hour than "how is the knee?"
- Offer a fixed time, not a vague soon. "Sunday at four" is a promise; "will visit" is not.
Avoid
- Don't turn the message into instructions about diet, walking and sugar. They have heard it.
- Don't say they look young for their age as if age were an insult.
- Don't write a cheerful group forward to someone who has just lost a spouse. Write two lines meant only for them.

How to wish someone on International Day of Older Persons
Older people in Indian families are usually thanked in general terms and asked about their health, and rarely asked about themselves. A good message on this day does the opposite: it names one memory, one habit or one thing they taught you, and it makes a concrete offer of time. A phone call beats a card, and a visit beats both.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + recipient language.

When is the International Day of Older Persons and why 1 October?

Is World Elders Day the same as the International Day of Older Persons?
Yes. World Elders Day is the name commonly used in India for the same United Nations observance on 1 October. It is different from World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is marked on 15 June.
Can parents legally claim maintenance from their children in India?
Yes. Under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, parents and senior citizens who cannot maintain themselves can apply to a district maintenance tribunal for a monthly allowance from children or heirs. The tribunal is meant to decide within about 90 days, and abandoning a senior citizen is a punishable offence.
What is the helpline number for senior citizens in India?
Elderline, on 14567, is the national toll-free helpline for senior citizens, run under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It handles pension and scheme queries, counselling, legal help, rescue of abandoned elders and reports of elder abuse.
Do all senior citizens in India get free health cover?
Everyone aged 70 and above is eligible for the Ayushman Vay Vandana card, launched on 29 October 2024, which gives cover of up to five lakh rupees a year for hospital treatment under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, with no income condition.
What is a good gift for grandparents on this day?
Time is the gift most older people name: a fixed visit, a long phone call, a recorded conversation about their life. Practical gifts that work well are a health check-up appointment, bathroom grab bars, a large-button phone, or help sorting pension and bank paperwork.
