About International Chess Day

International Chess Day is marked every 20 July, in 2027 on Tuesday, 20 July 2027. It is the anniversary of the founding of the International Chess Federation, FIDE, in Paris in 1924. FIDE has marked the date since 1966 and the United Nations adopted it as World Chess Day in 2019. India has a particular claim on it, since the game's oldest known ancestor, chaturanga, was played here.

Chess left India about fifteen hundred years ago and came back as a world sport. The board that travelled west from the Gupta period as chaturanga, through Persia as shatranj and into Europe, now has an Indian world champion sitting behind it. That round trip is the most interesting thing about this day if you are writing from India.

Why is International Chess Day on 20 July?

The International Chess Federation, FIDE, was founded in Paris on 20 July 1924. FIDE began marking the date as International Chess Day in 1966. The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 74/22 in 2019, naming 20 July World Chess Day, which is why you will see both names for the same date.

The UN's own description traces the game to chaturanga, played in northern India around the Gupta period, which moved west along trade routes, became chatrang and then shatranj in Persia and the Arab world, and reached Europe and Russia by about the year 1000. The four arms of the old Indian army, infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots, are still on the board as pawn, knight, bishop and rook.

What has India done in chess?

The All India Chess Federation was formed in 1951. For decades after that, India had strong players and no grandmasters.

  1. 1988
Viswanathan Anand becomes India's first grandmaster

At nineteen, ending a long wait and starting everything that followed

  2. 2000
    Anand wins the world championship

He held the undisputed title from 2007 to 2013

  3. 2002
Koneru Humpy becomes India's first woman grandmaster

    She was fifteen

  4. 2022
Chennai hosts the 44th Chess Olympiad

India's first time hosting. India's second open team took bronze, as did the women's team

  5. September 2024
India wins gold in both the open and women's events at the 45th Olympiad in Budapest

The first time India had won either, let alone both

  6. December 2024
Gukesh Dommaraju becomes world champion at 18

The youngest undisputed world champion in the game's history

India had 85 grandmasters as of December 2024, with thirteen of them in the world's top hundred, up from exactly one in 1988. The chain is easy to trace: Anand's titles made chess a career option, Chennai and then other cities built coaching around it, and cheap online play did the rest. Most of the current top names, Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, grew up with both.

How do you actually mark International Chess Day?

Play. That is not a joke; it is the only observance the day has ever really had.

  • Teach someone the moves. An hour is enough for a seven-year-old to play a full game badly, which is the correct way to start.
  • Run a school or office tournament on a short time control. Five minutes plus three seconds a move gets a full event into a lunch break.
  • Finish the game you abandoned. Most people have a correspondence game sitting unplayed for months.
  • Play over one famous game instead of watching highlights. A single well-annotated game teaches more than an hour of clips.
  • If you run a club, use the day to get beginners in. Free entry, boards provided, no rating required.

What should you write on International Chess Day?

For the person who taught you chess
Happy International Chess Day. You taught me the moves on a plastic set with a missing bishop and used a coin instead. I still cannot beat you and I still want to try.
For a child who plays
Happy Chess Day. You beat me fair and square last Sunday and I have not recovered. Bring the board on the weekend, I have been practising.
For a coach
On International Chess Day, thank you for running a club out of a corridor with borrowed clocks. Half the kids in that room would never have found the game otherwise.
For a friend you play online with
It is International Chess Day, which means you have no excuse left for not moving in our game. Your turn. Since Tuesday.
For a colleague
Happy International Chess Day. Lunchtime, five-minute games, loser makes the tea. You have been warned.
For a parent or grandparent
International Chess Day today. I keep thinking of the afternoons on the veranda when you would let me take a move back and then beat me anyway.
For a club or group
20 July is International Chess Day, the date FIDE was founded in 1924. Boards out, clocks on, beginners welcome, no rating needed.

How to wish someone on International Chess Day

This is one of the few awareness days where a real greeting makes sense, because chess is something people love rather than a cause they support. Write to the person who taught you the game, the child who has just beaten an adult for the first time, the coach who runs a club out of a school corridor, or the friend you have an unfinished online game with. Specific beats grand: name a game you both remember.

Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

When is International Chess Day in 2027?

International Chess Day 2027 falls on Tuesday, 20 July 2027.

Why is International Chess Day on 20 July?

Because the International Chess Federation, FIDE, was founded in Paris on 20 July 1924. FIDE has marked the date since 1966, and the United Nations General Assembly adopted it as World Chess Day in 2019.

Did chess originate in India?

The game's oldest known ancestor did. Chaturanga was played in northern India around the Gupta period, roughly the sixth century, and travelled west to become chatrang and shatranj in Persia and the Arab world before reaching Europe. Modern rules, including the queen's current powers, were settled in Europe much later, so chess as played today is the result of that long journey rather than a single Indian invention.

Who was India's first chess grandmaster?

Viswanathan Anand, in 1988, at the age of nineteen. He went on to win the world championship in 2000 and held the undisputed title from 2007 to 2013. Koneru Humpy became India's first woman grandmaster in 2002, aged fifteen.

Who is the youngest world chess champion?

Gukesh Dommaraju of India, who won the title in December 2024 at the age of eighteen, beating Ding Liren of China in Singapore. He is the second Indian to hold the undisputed championship, after Viswanathan Anand.

How many grandmasters does India have?

India had 85 grandmasters as of December 2024, thirteen of them ranked in the world's top hundred, compared with one in 1988. New titles are confirmed several times a year, so the number keeps rising.

What is a good way to mark International Chess Day at a school or office?

Run a short tournament with a fast time control, five minutes a player with a small increment, so a full event fits in a lunch break, and keep entry open to complete beginners. Teaching someone the moves for the first time counts just as much as playing.
