About Chartered Accountants Day
Chartered Accountants Day, or CA Day, marks the founding of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India on 1 July 1949, the day the Chartered Accountants Act came into force. Chartered accountants, CA students and ICAI's regional councils and branches observe it across India every year, and in 2027 it falls on Thursday, 1 July 2027.
Chartered Accountants Day is a professional foundation day, not a public holiday. For most of India's chartered accountants it is a working day in the thick of the July tax season, marked with a function at the local ICAI branch, a round of messages from clients and juniors, and, for firms that remember, a cake in the office.
Why is Chartered Accountants Day celebrated on 1 July?
Chartered Accountants Day is celebrated on 1 July because the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 came into force on that date and created the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. The Act, numbered Act 38 of 1949, received assent on 1 May 1949 and took effect two months later. It was passed by the Constituent Assembly sitting as India's provisional Parliament, before the country became a republic.
Before 1949 the profession was only loosely regulated. The colonial government had kept a Register of Accountants from 1930 and set up an Indian Accountancy Board, but there was no independent body of accountants that set its own exams and disciplined its own members. In 1948 an expert committee recommended an autonomous institute, and the government accepted it.
G. P. Kapadia was ICAI's first President, from 1949 to 1952, and received the first membership certificate on 9 June 1950. In 2024 the institute completed 75 years.
What does the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India do?
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India is the statutory body that trains, examines, licenses and disciplines chartered accountants in India. It works under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and is headquartered at ICAI Bhawan in New Delhi.
In practice, that means several things a client may not realise. Only a chartered accountant holding a certificate of practice from ICAI can act as a statutory auditor. ICAI writes the accounting and auditing standards Indian companies follow, including the Ind AS standards largely aligned with international ones. It runs a peer review of audit firms, set up in 2002, and a disciplinary system that can suspend or remove members for misconduct. By membership, it is the second-largest professional accounting body in the world.
Ya eshu supteshu jagarti: one who is awake among those who sleep.
ICAI's motto was suggested by Sri Aurobindo in 1949. It is meant as a description of the auditor's job: staying alert when everyone else has stopped checking.
How does someone become a chartered accountant in India?
Someone becomes a chartered accountant in India by clearing three levels of ICAI examinations and completing practical training under a practising CA. The levels are Foundation, Intermediate and Final, and 24 months of practical training, still widely called articleship, must be done before the Final. Clearing the Final is treated as a family event, which is why "CA results day" produces almost as many congratulation messages as CA Day itself.
Members are admitted as associates (ACA) and can later become fellows (FCA). The Act reserves the chartered accountant title for ICAI members, which is why an unqualified "CA" on a signboard is an offence, not a boast.
What else falls on 1 July?
Chartered Accountants Day shares 1 July with two other observances. Offices sometimes combine them, so it helps to know which is which.
| Observance | What it marks | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Chartered Accountants Day | ICAI's founding under the 1949 Act | Chartered accountants and CA students |
| National Doctors' Day | Birth and death anniversary of Dr B. C. Roy | Doctors |
| GST Day | The launch of the Goods and Services Tax on 1 July 2017 | Tax officials, businesses, and in practice many CAs |
See National Doctors' Day and GST Day for those days.
What should you write to a chartered accountant on CA Day?
Write to a chartered accountant on CA Day about something they actually did: the audit that caught a problem, the return filed at midnight, the advice that saved you money honestly. July is heavy with filing deadlines, since most individual income tax returns are due by 31 July, so a short message they can read between client calls is kinder than a long one.
Do
- Mention the person's real work: audits, tax, advisory, teaching or industry roles.
- Keep it brief in July; many CAs are working late on returns and audits.
- Congratulate CA students too; the day belongs to the whole profession.
Avoid
- Don't use the wish to slip in a free tax question.
- Don't joke that CAs have no life if you don't know them well.
- Don't call every accountant a CA; the title belongs to ICAI members.
How to wish someone on Chartered Accountants Day
A CA Day wish thanks a chartered accountant for work that clients rarely see: audits signed with care, returns filed on time, honest advice when a shortcut was on offer. It can be light, since CAs joke about deadlines and balance sheets more than anyone, but it should respect the effort behind the qualification. Keep it short; 1 July falls in one of their busiest months.
