About Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima, also called Buddha Jayanti or Vesak, is the full moon of the month of Vaishakha, when Buddhists in India remember the Buddha's birth, his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and his passing at Kushinagar. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, 20 May 2027. It is a holiday in all central government offices, and Tibetan Buddhist communities in Sikkim and Ladakh keep the same events as Saga Dawa.

Buddhists often call this the thrice-blessed full moon. In the tradition followed in India, three moments of the Buddha's life fell on the same night of the year: his birth, his awakening under the bodhi tree, and his death eighty years later.

How is the date of Buddha Purnima fixed?

Buddha Purnima falls on Purnima, the full moon, of the lunar month of Vaishakha, which lands in late April or May. Indian panchangs set it by the tithi, so the Gregorian date slides by about eleven days a year and jumps forward in years when an extra lunar month is added. In 2026, for example, it fell on 1 May.

Other Buddhist countries use their own lunar calendars, and the dates do not always match India's. The United Nations marks the Day of Vesak on the full moon of May, following a 1950 resolution of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, and Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand each fix Vesak by their own reckoning.

Inside India the biggest difference is in the Himalaya. Tibetan Buddhists in Sikkim, Ladakh and parts of Arunachal Pradesh keep the same three events as Saga Dawa Düchen, the fifteenth day of the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar. Because that calendar inserts its leap months differently, Saga Dawa can fall a full month after Buddha Purnima. In 2026 Buddha Purnima was on 1 May and Saga Dawa on 31 May.

Buddha Purnima is one of the fourteen compulsory holidays for central government offices across India, and many states give a holiday too.

What does Buddha Purnima commemorate?

Buddha Purnima commemorates the birth, the enlightenment and the parinirvana, or final passing, of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. Theravada, Tibetan and Ambedkarite (Navayana) Buddhists remember all three on this full moon. Some East Asian Mahayana traditions mark the Buddha's birthday on a separate date.

His exact dates are uncertain. Many Indian sources give 563 to 483 BCE, while the Sri Lankan tradition used by the UN places his birth in 623 BCE, and historians continue to debate the chronology.

In some Hindu traditions the Buddha is counted among the avatars of Vishnu. Many Buddhists, including Ambedkarite Buddhists, do not accept that view, so it is better left out of a message to a Buddhist friend.

How do Buddhists observe Buddha Purnima?

Buddhists observe Buddha Purnima with a visit to a vihara or stupa, usually early in the morning, carrying flowers, incense and lamps. Many wear white. Lay Buddhists often take the eight precepts for the day, which add fasting after noon and simple living to the usual five, and spend time in chanting and meditation.

Generosity, dana, is at the centre of the day. Families feed monks, the poor and neighbours, and donate clothes. Many cook kheer, recalling the bowl of milk-rice the young woman Sujata offered the Buddha before his enlightenment, according to Buddhist tradition. Meat and alcohol are avoided, and in Tibetan communities the whole month of Saga Dawa is kept vegetarian, since good and bad deeds in that month are believed to be multiplied many times over.

In some places devotees pour water or milk over an image of the infant Buddha, a ritual of cleansing. Releasing caged birds and fish is also practised, though the practice is controversial and many Buddhists now discourage it.

In Delhi, the Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Confederation hold an annual Vesak observance attended by monks from many countries.

Hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by love, this is an old rule.

Dhammapada, verse 5, translated by F. Max Müller (1881)

What should you write on Buddha Purnima?

A Buddha Purnima message works best when it is short and calm, closer to a blessing than a celebration. A line from the Dhammapada, or a wish for peace and clear thinking, suits the day better than fireworks and confetti. For Ambedkarite Buddhist friends, "Jai Bhim, Namo Buddhay" is a common greeting.

For a Buddhist friend
Namo Buddhaya. Wishing you a peaceful Buddha Purnima, a quiet morning at the vihara and a heart as clear as tonight's moon.
For parents
Buddha Purnima greetings, Aai and Baba. Thank you for teaching us that kindness matters more than being right.
For an Ambedkarite friend
Jai Bhim, Namo Buddhay. Warm greetings on Buddha Jayanti to you and everyone at home.
For a colleague
Happy Buddha Purnima. Wishing you a calm day and a restful long weekend if you're taking one.
For a friend in Sikkim or Ladakh
Tashi delek, and warm wishes for Saga Dawa. May the merit of this month come back to you many times over.
For someone going through a hard time
On Buddha Purnima, wishing you some peace. The Buddha taught that everything changes, and so will this.

Do

  • Keep the message quiet and kind; the day is for reflection.
  • If you visit a vihara or monastery, dress modestly, remove shoes where asked, and walk clockwise around stupas.
  • If you bring food, keep it vegetarian and bring enough to share.

Avoid

  • Don't call it a Hindu festival or describe the Buddha as an avatar in a message to Buddhists.
  • Avoid gifting Buddha heads or statues as home decor; many Buddhists find that disrespectful.
  • Don't send alcohol or meat as a gift on the day.
Vaishakha
The lunar month, usually April to May, whose full moon is Buddha Purnima.
Vesak
The Pali-derived name for the festival, used across South and Southeast Asia.
Saga Dawa
The fourth Tibetan month; its full moon, Saga Dawa Düchen, marks the same events.
Parinirvana
The Buddha's final passing, at Kushinagar.
Dana
Generosity, especially giving to monks and the needy.
Vihara
A Buddhist monastery or temple.
Namo Buddhaya
"Homage to the Buddha", a common Buddhist greeting.

Ambedkarite Buddhists also mark Ambedkar Jayanti on 14 April. For other holidays, see the 2027 calendar.

How to wish someone on Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is a quiet, reflective day, so the right wish is calm rather than festive. Speak of peace, kindness and clear thinking, and if you know the person, of the practice they keep: a morning at the vihara, a vegetarian meal, a day of precepts. "Namo Buddhaya" or "Buddha Jayanti greetings" suit Buddhist friends; "Happy Buddha Purnima" is fine for colleagues.
