About Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj, also called Bhai Phota, Bhau Beej and Yama Dwitiya, falls on the second day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, which in 2026 is Wednesday, 11 November 2026. Sisters mark their brothers' foreheads with a tilak, feed them at their own home and pray for their long life; brothers bring a gift. It is the last of the five days of Diwali.

Bhai Dooj closes the Diwali week. The dooj in the name is Dwitiya, the second lunar day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, and the ritual at its centre takes about four minutes: a sister applies a tilak to her brother's forehead, does his aarti, feeds him something sweet and prays that he outlives her worry. Then he eats a full meal at her house and leaves money or a gift behind.

What is the story behind Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj has two stories behind it, and they do not agree. The older one goes with the older name, Yama Dwitiya. In that account, Yama, the god of death, visits his sister Yamuna, who feeds him at her own home. He is so pleased that he grants a boon: anyone who eats at his sister's house on this day, having taken her tilak, is spared the terrors of Naraka. This is why panchangs group Yamraj, his scribe Chitragupta and the Yamadutas together for worship on the day, and why pilgrims take a dip at Vishram Ghat in Mathura, where the Yamuna runs.

The other story is Vaishnava. After killing Narakasura, Krishna goes to his sister Subhadra, who receives him with a lamp, a tilak, flowers and sweets. Families in the west and south are likelier to tell this one; families in the north and east, the Yama one. Both end at the same place, which is a sister's doorway.

Note what neither story says. Nobody is being rescued. The sister is not asking for protection, she is giving it, by standing between her brother and death.

Not the same as Raksha Bandhan

People often treat Bhai Dooj as a second Raksha Bandhan. The rituals rhyme, but the shape of the day is reversed.

The aparahna rule matters in practice. If your family follows a panchang, the tilak is done in the afternoon, not at breakfast, and married sisters plan the cooking around it.

How is Bhai Dooj celebrated at home?

On Bhai Dooj the sister prepares a seat, applies the tilak, does her brother's aarti and feeds him, and he gives his gift.

  1. The sister prepares the seatA low chowki, often with a square or a lotus drawn in rice flour or rangoli powder where the brother will sit.
  2. She applies the tilakRoli and rice in the north; in Bengal, sandalwood paste, curd and kajal applied with the little finger. Some traditions add a drop of ghee.
  3. Aarti and a knotA lamp is circled in front of him, and in many families a moli thread is tied on his wrist or a garland placed over him.
  4. Sweets, then the mealHe is fed a sweet first, then the full lunch she has cooked. Several regions keep the sister fasting until the tilak is done.
  5. He gives his giftCash, clothes, jewellery or something she has asked for. The amount matters far less than that he came.

Bhaier kopale dilam phonta, Jomer duare porlo kanta. I have put the mark on my brother's forehead, and a thorn at the door of Death.

Manipur's Meitei households mark a separate festival in the same season, Ningol Chakkouba, on the second day of the month of Hiyangei. Married daughters are invited home for a feast their parents cook, the brother having gone to invite them a week earlier. It is a public holiday in Manipur and it is not Bhai Dooj, though the impulse is recognisable.

When the day is complicated

Not every sibling pair can do this. In Haryana and Maharashtra, a sister with no brother, or whose brother is far away, does the tilak and aarti to the moon instead. Cousins count as siblings across most of India, and a brother without a sister is welcomed by a cousin or a friend's sister. None of this is a compromise; it is part of the custom.

Estranged siblings are the harder case. A tilak photo on a group chat is not a reconciliation, and a long message on a festival day can feel like an ambush. "Thinking of you today" is enough, and it leaves the next move to them.

What to write

For a brother
Happy Bhai Dooj. I am not there to do your tilak, so consider yourself blessed remotely and eat properly for once.
For a sister
Happy Bhai Dooj, and thank you for a whole year of picking up the phone. Your tilak is the only one I have ever sat still for.
For a younger sibling
Bhai Dooj mubarak. Still older, still right about most things, still on your side. Call when you get a minute.
For a sibling abroad
Happy Bhai Dooj. The chowki is out, the sweets are ready, and there is a gap where you usually sit. Next year, properly.
For a cousin who is like a sibling
Happy Bhai Dooj. You have done more brother duty than most actual brothers, so this is yours.
For a first Bhai Dooj after a sister's wedding
Happy Bhai Dooj at your own home for the first time. I will be there for the food, obviously. Give my regards to everyone.
For a brother-in-law or a friend's sister
Wishing you a very happy Bhai Dooj with your family. Hope the house is loud and the lunch is long.
For a colleague
Happy Bhai Dooj to you and your siblings. Hope you got the afternoon off for the tilak.
For a friend whose sibling died this year
Thinking of you today, and thinking of her. No wishes, just here if you want to talk.

Do

  • Go to your sister's home if you can, or send the gift so it arrives before the day rather than after.
  • Ask which tilak your family uses; the Bengali phota and the north Indian roli tilak are not interchangeable.
  • Include stepsiblings, cousins and chosen siblings in the same breath as everyone else.

Avoid

  • Don't make the gift a measure of affection in a public message. Money given on Bhai Dooj is private.
  • Don't send a festive greeting to a home in mourning, and don't post a sibling photo of a family that has just had a loss.
  • Don't tell a sister without a brother that she is missing out; the custom already has an answer for that.

Bhai Dooj follows Govardhan Puja and ends the week that began with Dhanteras and Diwali.

How to wish someone on Bhai Dooj

A Bhai Dooj message works best when it is personal and slightly unsentimental, the way siblings actually talk. Refer to something only the two of you would remember, and if you cannot be there, say so plainly instead of sending a stock line. For a sister the wish is usually gratitude; for a brother it is a prayer for his health. If a sibling has died or the two are estranged, skip the festive wording and send something quieter.

Frequently asked questions

When is Bhai Dooj in 2026?

Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on Wednesday, 11 November 2026.

What is the difference between Bhai Dooj and Raksha Bandhan?

On Raksha Bandhan a sister ties a thread on her brother's wrist and he promises to look after her. On Bhai Dooj the brother travels to his sister's home, she applies a tilak, does his aarti and feeds him a meal she has cooked, and she prays for his long life. Raksha Bandhan falls in Shravan, around August; Bhai Dooj is the last of the five Diwali days in Kartik.

What time should the Bhai Dooj tilak be done?

Panchangs place the Yama Dwitiya puja in aparahna, the afternoon window, so families that follow a muhurat do the tilak after midday rather than in the morning. The exact minutes depend on your city's sunrise and sunset, so take them from a local panchang.

What does a sister do on Bhai Dooj if she has no brother?

In Haryana, Maharashtra and several other regions she applies the tilak and does the aarti to the moon, praying for it as she would for a brother. Cousins, stepbrothers and close family friends are also treated as brothers across most of India, and the ritual is considered complete either way.

Why is Bhai Dooj also called Yama Dwitiya?

Because of the account in which Yama, the god of death, is fed by his sister Yamuna at her home on this tithi, and in return grants that anyone who takes his sister's tilak and eats at her house that day will be spared the torments of Naraka. Yamraj, his scribe Chitragupta and the Yamadutas are worshipped on the day for the same reason.

What do brothers give their sisters on Bhai Dooj?

Cash, clothes, jewellery or something the sister has asked for; there is no fixed item and no fixed amount. The older understanding is that the gift acknowledges the meal and the blessing, so turning up matters more than what is handed over.

Is Bhai Dooj called something else in Bengal and Maharashtra?

Yes. In West Bengal and Tripura it is Bhai Phota, where the sister fasts until she applies a mark of sandalwood, curd and kajal with her little finger. In Maharashtra and Goa it is Bhau Beej, where the brother sits inside a drawn square and bites a bitter karith fruit before the tilak.
