About Baby Shower
A baby shower in India is usually held in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy and is known by a different name in almost every region: godh bharai in the Hindi belt, valaikappu and seemantham in the south, dohale jevan in Maharashtra, shaadh in Bengal. The older women of the family bless the mother-to-be, fill her lap with fruit and sweets, and feed her what she has been craving. Friends increasingly host a second, informal shower alongside it.
The English phrase covers at least six Indian functions that look nothing like each other. Some are priest-led rites from the Grihya Sutras. Some are an afternoon of women, bangles and too much food, with no priest anywhere. Many families hold both, a week apart.
| Region or community | Name | Usual timing | What stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi belt, Punjab, Rajasthan | Godh bharai | 7th month | Elders fill her lap (godh) with coconut, rice, fruit, dry fruit and sweets |
| Tamil Nadu, south Kerala | Valaikappu | 5th and 7th month | Glass bangles in red and green, slipped on in odd numbers |
| Tamil and Telugu Brahmin families | Seemantham | 5th to 8th month | The priest-led form of simantonnayana, with homam and mantras |
| Maharashtra | Dohale jevan | 7th or 9th month | A meal of her cravings; green nauvari saree, flower jewellery, a decorated swing |
| Bengal | Shaadh, sadhbhakshan | 8th or 9th month | She is fed by hand, payesh first, in a new saree |
| Karnataka, Andhra, Telangana | Seemantham, kubsa | 5th or 7th month | Bangles, a new saree from the in-laws, a return to her parents' home |
Where does the Indian baby shower ritual come from?
The Sanskrit rite behind the Indian baby shower is simantonnayana, the third of the sixteen samskaras. The name means parting the hair upwards. In the Grihya Sutras the husband parts his wife's hair with a porcupine quill, darbha grass and a sprig of udumbara while verses are recited. The texts do not agree with each other. Some place it in the fifth month, others in the seventh or eighth. Some say it is done only for the first pregnancy, others for each one, and they differ on whether the rite is for the mother or the child. That disagreement is ancient, so if your family does it in the fifth month and your cousin's in the eighth, both are following someone's book.
The practical logic of the seventh month holds up: the pregnancy is settled, travel is still comfortable, and in most families she moves to her mother's house soon after. In Tamil Nadu the bangles are the point of the day. *Valai* is bangle, *kaappu* is protection, and families say the sound of glass on glass reaches a baby whose hearing has developed. They go on in odd numbers and stay on until the delivery.
- An oil bath and haldiIn the south she is bathed and dressed by the women of the house, often in silk chosen by her mother.
- New clothes and flowersA saree from the in-laws or the parents, jasmine in the hair, flower jewellery in Maharashtra and Andhra.
- The blessingShe sits facing east. Married women apply haldi-kumkum, wave aarti, and place their hands on her head one by one.
- Filling the lapCoconut, rice, bananas, dry fruit and sweets are placed in the fold of her saree. In the south, bangles are slipped on at this point.
- The mealSeven rice varieties in Tamil homes, her stated cravings in Maharashtra and Bengal, and payesh or payasam almost everywhere.
Who hosts an Indian baby shower?
Across most of south and east India the baby shower is hosted by the woman's parents, at their home, often as the start of the stay that runs through delivery and the weeks after. North Indian families more often see the in-laws host, or hold a second function of their own. The split is regional, not a slight.
The traditional guest list is women. Men attend the seemantham homam, where the husband has a defined role, and the modern shower. A classic godh bharai or valaikappu afternoon is a room full of aunts, and that is the intended atmosphere rather than an oversight.
Gifts, money and the things people get wrong
Cash is given as shagun, and the amount ends in one: 101, 501, 2,100. The extra rupee keeps the sum indivisible and refuses a round number that ends at zero. Beyond that, the most useful gifts are for the mother, not the nursery. She will be handed forty baby outfits and no nipple cream.
- For the mother: a feeding pillow, nightwear that opens at the front, a water bottle she can use one-handed, a month of tiffin from a cook she likes.
- For the household: a thermos, a night lamp, muslin cloths, a gift card she can spend at 3 am.
- For a colleague: pool a group gift, keep it useful, skip anything that has to go home on a two-wheeler.
Some families do not bring baby clothes, a cot or a pram into the house before the birth. It is a live custom in many communities and has nothing to do with how happy anyone is. Ask a sister or a cousin before you buy furniture.
Do
- Ask what the function is called in her family and use that word on the card. Godh bharai and valaikappu are not interchangeable.
- Offer one dated, specific thing: a lift to the 36-week scan, the school pickup for her older child, a home-cooked meal in week two.
- Send the wish even if you cannot attend. Most showers now have people joining from Dubai and Bengaluru on video.
Avoid
- Do not ask whether it is a boy or a girl. Under the PC-PNDT Act no one may communicate the sex of a foetus to a pregnant woman or her family, by words, signs or any other method. Nobody in the room is supposed to know.
- Do not tell birth stories. Not yours, not your sister's, and especially not the one that ended badly.
- Do not comment on her size, her weight gain, her face or what she is eating. She has had enough of that from strangers in lifts.
- Do not promise the baby will be "just like her father" or predict a cricketer. Say something about her instead.
What to write
For a formal note, three lines is enough. Name the ceremony, say one true thing about her, offer one specific help.
What comes after the baby shower?
After the baby shower, the functions that follow come quickly. The naming ceremony may be on the sixth, eleventh, twelfth or twenty-first day depending on the family. Annaprashan, the first solid food, usually falls around six months, and the mundan ceremony anywhere from one to three years. The card you send when the baby arrives matters more than this one, because by then she will be exhausted and most people will have stopped checking in.
If you are her manager, know the law before the shower. The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 gives 26 weeks of paid leave to women with fewer than two surviving children, in establishments employing ten or more people, of which no more than eight weeks may be taken before the due date. Adopting and commissioning mothers get 12 weeks.
How to wish someone on Baby Shower
Write to the woman, not only to the bump. She is seven or eight months pregnant, probably sleeping badly, and about to be given a lot of advice. A good message names something about her, promises one concrete thing you will do after the baby arrives, and leaves out predictions about the baby's sex, weight or looks. For a couple who have had a long or painful road to this pregnancy, keep it short, warm and free of guarantees.
Write a few lines in your own words, pick a design and share it as one link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. They open an animated card made just for them, with no app and no sign-up.
Language tip: English, Hindi + regional language.
Frequently asked questions
Which month of pregnancy is a baby shower held in India?
Most Indian baby showers are held in the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, though Tamil valaikappu is often done in the fifth month as well and Bengali shaadh usually falls in the eighth or ninth. The classical texts themselves disagree on the timing, so families follow their own practice.
What is the difference between godh bharai, valaikappu and seemantham?
They are regional forms of the same pregnancy rite. Godh bharai is the north Indian lap-filling ceremony, valaikappu is the Tamil bangle ceremony where glass bangles are slipped on in odd numbers, and seemantham is the priest-led Sanskrit rite of simantonnayana performed with a homam, common in Tamil and Telugu Brahmin families.
Is it rude to ask whether the baby is a boy or a girl?
It is worse than rude. India's PC-PNDT Act, 1994 prohibits anyone from communicating the sex of a foetus to a pregnant woman or her relatives by words, signs or any other method, so the parents are not supposed to know and should not be asked.
What should I write in a baby shower card if the couple have had a difficult time conceiving?
Keep it short, address the couple rather than the baby, and avoid promises about the future. A line such as "We are so glad we get to celebrate with you both, and we think of you every day" is enough, and it does not put them under pressure to perform happiness.
What is a good baby shower gift in India?
Gifts for the mother work better than gifts for the nursery, because she will already receive plenty of baby clothes: front-opening nightwear, a feeding pillow, a month of home-cooked tiffin, or cash as shagun in an amount ending in one rupee. Check first, since some families do not bring baby things into the house before the birth.
Do men attend an Indian baby shower?
At a seemantham the husband has a formal role in the ritual and men attend the meal. A traditional godh bharai, valaikappu or dohale jevan is usually an afternoon for the women of both families, while modern friend-hosted showers are mixed.
